Gonorsteins Top 10 Joints That Never (But Should Have) Made The Soul Crate

  1. Massive Attack – "Any Love" (1988)
This is a cover of the Chaka khan classic over the Daisy Lady break - original dancefloor pressure way before all there introspective shit.
  2. Loose Ends – "Love's got me" (1990)
How this didn't make the CD I don't know. This up-tempo banger is perfect to practice the running man too in your polka dot shirt and pin roll Chipies.
  3. Sounds of blackness – "Optimistic" (1991)
The perfect smoothed out cross over track with purely righteous lyrics too.
  4. Jody Watley & Rakim – "Friends" (1989)
This one's definitely on the pop tip - but with a Sly Johnson drum break and Rakim on the vocals you cant front"
  5. Courtney Buchanan – "R U Consious" (1993)
Stevie Wonderish vocals over Joe Williams' "Get out my life woman", way before Jamie Cullam rinsed the same beat.
  6. Diana Brown & Barry K Sharpe – "The Master plan" (1990)
A street soul classic - big in the Acid Jazz clubs of the early 90's.
  7. Al B Sure & Slick Rick – "If I'm not your lover" (1989)
Not strictly a street soul tune - but a definite Teddy Riley signature beat classic.
  8. Samuelle – "Do you like what You see" (1990)
Should do a separate swing chart really - If ever there was a song to do the splits to in your red, black and green click suit - this is it.
  9. Orange Juice Jones – "To Be immortal" - (1988)
Def Jam's OJ Jones drops spoken word logic over the "Once in a Lifetime" Talking Heads break, slightly before KC Flight did the same with Planet E.
  10. One world – "Down on love" (1990 Original Westwood promo dubplate)
I don't reckon this hyped up disco version ever saw the light of day, but you can console yourself with the official release on the Soul Crate"

Hudson's Top 5 Cosby Show Guest Spots

From 1984 to 1992 The Cosby Show was running things (although it did fall off towards the end). If you're a Cosby fan like Hudson you're probably familiar with all the guests they had on the show over the years which were shoehorned into the episode's plot. Here is what he considers his favourites although episodes that had people in that became famous after being in the show like Alicia Keys, Adam Sandler and Mos Def are notably absent.
  1. "A Touch of Wonder" with Stevie Wonder
This is a pure Cosby classic - Denise gets a car and goes out on the road with Theo. She crashes into a Limo and who should step out but Stevie who invites the whole family to the studio (this all happens off camera - you can't do all that in front of a live studio audience.) The Huxtables go into Stevie's studio and he's got this pure DOPE beat going on while he's doing some vocal doodling over the top. Stevie thinks it needs something extra so he starts sampling the Huxtables and makes a hot beat out of them. This is probably on YouTube - go and have a butchers.
  2. "Play I Again, Russell" with Art Blakely, Tito Puente, Joe Sample from The Crusaders, Eric Gale, Jimmy Heath and more
It turns out The Huxtables grandad is a famous jazz musician and he gets with the old band but finds out he can't play as well as he use to. With a little encouragement from the family he gets his chops back and blows the other musicians off the stage with a blistering solo. Worth checking out for all the jazz greats playing together at the end of the episode.
  3. "Mrs. Westlake" with Sonia Braga
You may not know who Sonia Braga is but she's a Brazilian actress that's been in loads of stuff over the years including a 1970's Brazilian soap opera called 'Dancin' Days' that used to be on Channel 4 in the 80's and 'Vila Sesamo' (a Brazilian version of Sesame Street that featured a robot that looked proper gutter. Also, if you come across the soundtrack to it pick it up - it's nice and mainly written by Marcos Valle) so she's on the list.
The premise of this episode is that Theo's got beef with a teacher who's strict and who he refers to as The Dragon Lady. Heathcliff invites over for dinner and is suprised to see that Mrs. Westlake is pretty hot. Needless to say, hilarity ensues.
  4. Dizzy Gillespie
I don't know what this episode's called and how Dizzy ends up hanging out with the Huxtables (probably another grandad whose a famous jazz musician) but in the episode he blows his cheeks out, which is rather frightening and plays the jew's harp while doing a funky little shuffle. It's quite a rarity to see hear the funk coming from a jew's harp.
  5. Danny Kaye
Rudy's friend Peter hides out at the Huxtable residence because he doesn't want to go to the dentist. They hook Peter up with their dentist who turns out to be Danny Kaye, the legendary comedy actor, who gets him to relax with a series of tricks and jokes. I've included this for the fact that Peter is in it as he was one of the many peripheral characters that was pretty good like Kenny and Theo's homeboy Cockroach. I could probably do another list of Top Cockroach moments (the one when he shaves his head is tip top.)
Coming Soon: Top Desmonds moments (the one where the posh one talks yard is a highlight.)
